“Baptismvm in Mortem”

Another interesting sight is what appears to be a baptismal font with these words on the wall “Baptismvm in Mortem” (baptisms for the dead). I would think these words are as puzzling to the many who read it as is the scripture in 1 Corinthians 15:29. It is not puzzling to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it is why our temples are so important. If a person does not have the opportunity to hear the gospel or be baptized while on the earth (perhaps they were born at a time when the gospel of Jesus Christ was not on the earth, or they lived in a country where there was no Christianity, etc.), they can, as was also taught by Paul, be baptized by someone who is willing to stand as proxy for them in the temple. They then have the choice to accept this baptism or not. To learn more go to: http://www.lds.org/temples/purpose/0,11298,1897-1,00.html
